Course Description

In this course, you will learn grammatical conventions such as integrating verb tenses, clauses, passive voice, and indirect speech; contextualized writing tasks from the format of the paragraph to the construction of five-paragraph essays with thesis statements, supporting details, and introductory and concluding paragraphs; and further application of organizing principles in a variety of forms of writing such as cause and effect, comparison and contrast, problem and solution, written summaries, and personal expression. You will use the writing process to integrate grammar, vocabulary, and rhetorical objectives in academic writing.

This course also focuses on: development of additional reading strategies, applied to both literature and informational text, with emphasis on identifying main ideas and supporting details, separating fact from opinion, outlining, predicting, identifying author’s purpose, describing characters and themes in modified selections of literature; development of vocabulary in theme-based contexts; listening for main ideas and organizing principles in academic lectures; and strategies for participation in group projects, discussions, and presentations. You will also have opportunities for extensive, individualized reading practice.

Throughout the course of this unit, you will explore the overarching question, "Does creativity matter?" through a variety of persuasive nonfiction texts, including articles, essays, and commercials. In addition, we will explore this question through the central text in this unit, The Giver. The texts explored in this unit will allow us to analyze how authors construct their arguments in our reading and writing.

ESL C - Unit 2: Give & Take (Realistic Fiction)
Essential Question: How Much Should People Help Each Other?
Throughout the course of this unit, you will explore the overarching question, "How much should people help each other?" through a variety of nonfiction texts, including articles, essays, autobiographies and memoirs, as well as the whole-class novel, Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli. As the culminating writing project for this unit, you will create a public service announcement reflecting a way in which people can help others.

ESL C - Unit 3: Opening Doors (I-Search)
EQ: How can knowledge open doors?
In this unit, you will consider how knowledge can open doors. Ultimately, you will develop a strong understanding of the importance of each day and how it affects your success in high school and beyond. You will consider this in three ways: (1) How can learning give you power; (2) How can books take you places; and (3) How can knowledge change the world?
